It's the New Year, and you know what that means, time to focus on changing yourself for the better. This year, to become more awesome than you already are, how about being more creative and therefore, more happy. Happiness sounds great to me!
So, what does it take to become more creative and happier? First, let's start with three changes that make a huge difference in how we feel. Those changes are, promising to love yourself for who you are, being good to yourself and do more of what makes you happy.
So let's tackle these three changes so we can make this the best year ever, ready to get started?
1. Love yourself for who you are
You may or may not have realized this yet, but you are one of a kind. Being creative is about using your uniqueness as an advantage to solve problems and create things in ways no one else can or would. Trying to be someone else will never work, nor will it make you happy.
The sooner you start feeling better about being you, the sooner others can enjoy you and what you have to offer. So, get more creative this year by loving yourself and creating with confidence.
2. Be good to yourself
Being good to yourself means taking care of your mind and body as best as you can. The more healthy you are mentally and physically, the more creative you are in trying to solve problems, accomplish goals, and be successful.
When you accomplish goals you get to experience the natural consequence of feeling happy (awesome job if I don't say so myself). Then not only are you experiencing joy from your accomplishments, you are getting rewarded by having more physical and mental capacity to continue moving forward.
You can easily become overwhelmed when you try to accomplish too many things. If that happens, taking care of yourself isn't a priority anymore. You don't feel happy, you feel stressed. You are not the only one that suffers when you take too much on. So, delegate, ask for help, and boot the non-essentials. Because taking care of yourself is not just a priority, it is top priority.
3. Do more of what makes you happy
Take the time to do something creative that makes you feel happy. Being creative changes your mood and mindset for the better.
Dr. S. Ausim Azizi, chairman of the department of neurology at Temple University’s School of Medicine in Philadelphia who studies brain activity and cell signaling says, "When people do things that make them feel good, like a hobby, it activates an area of the brain called the nucleus accumbens that controls how we feel about life. Activities you enjoy also stimulate the brain’s septal zone — its “feel good” area — and that makes you feel happy."
Being creative is a cycle. The more you create the better you feel. The better you feel the more you create. When you are out of the creative cycle you can get depressed, in a slump, unfocused, and feel bad about yourself. To get back into the cycle take some time to do something you love that is creative, then you will soon feel rejuvenated and start to thrive again.
So, love yourself, take care of yourself, and schedule some time for yourself everyday. You may feel like you don't have the time to devote to these three important changes. I understand this feeling, but I also know how important it is to take time. If you are stretched so thin that you have no time for yourself, then it is time to set some limits with others, take control of your life, and learn that one of the important things in life is you.
Don't forget that these three changes will help you think more clearly, sharpen your focus, be more creative, be happier, and over-all a better person not only for you, but for others to enjoy.
