If you would have asked me what Drawlloween was a month ago, I wouldn't have had a clue. Well, I tried Drawlloween, and liked it! The point of Drawlloween was to show off a creative Halloween inspired drawing every day for the entire month of October. I can now say that 31 unique drawings later, it and I are well acquainted. This inspired me to make my very own Drawlloween called Artober for kids. You can check out all those projects here.

You can see my creations in the panel on the left. I initially got hooked in by a friend who asked if anyone wanted to do drawlloween with her on Facebook. I thought, “That sounds challenging, but fun… I’ll try.”

A month later, I can tell you it was fun! And challenging. And inspiring. It really got my creative juices flowing, and kept them going all month long. It was an activity that follows some of my thoughts for what I’d like to do with daily art inspiration on Createful Art.

Initially, I thought I’d give myself 30 minutes for each drawing. That alone might have been one of the biggest challenges of Drawlloween. I wasn't consistent at all. Some drawings were completed quickly, while others I spent more time on. It was difficult to think creatively at first and on certain days, but it really helped me start to think more creative.

What I didn't allow myself to do is quit. I knew this was good for me. I needed to make it part of my daily routine, but I didn't want making art to become a chore either. And, as the month passed along, it became a daily habit that I looked forward to. I found myself wanting to draw more and more with each day I drew. Strange how that works.

My inner critique was a loud mouth. I had to tell it to shut up a few times. I wanted all my drawings to be perfect and awesome. They weren’t, and I’m fine with that. I found out it was hard to have a great drawing in 30 minutes and that I have no specific drawing style. I wasn't drawing to sell, or to impress, I was drawing to practice and have fun. As soon as I let go of my expectations I found it to be a lot more fun.

The point of Drawlloween, or any regular drawing activity, is to make drawing and creativity a habit. To be creative. And especially, to have fun! Which I did.

Did you want to  participate in Drawlloween (or Sketchtober) this year? If so, share your experiences in the comments. I hope you join me and my kids for a art project every day of October. They are all free Halloween art projects for kids, and I call it Artober.
