Hello, and welcome to Createful Art! This is a place you can learn to paint anything you want with acrylics. One of the most popular, and one of my personal favorite subjects to paint and enjoy on the wall, are beautiful sunsets and sunrises. You can enjoy gorgeous sunsets and sunrises from all over the world, and every one is different. They remind us of living and relaxing in the moment. Enjoying it all while the world displays its colors. So, how do you paint sunsets? First, let's discuss a few important steps that will help you paint amazing sunsets. Then, I have over 30 sunset painting tutorials and lessons that will help you practice and learn more so you're inspired to paint a sunset. The first step is to mix and match colors. This can be from a picture or in real life. Once you know what you want your sunset to look like, you want to match the colors you see. This requires some mixing skills to match the colors from the sunsets or sunrises. No worries, I've got you! I teach you how to mix and match any color in one of my free lessons. Sign up for those here. Plus, I include color mixing in my workshops. Step two, start painting with your lightest and brightest colors. If you try to layer over dark colors you will not be able to achieve a bright sunset. Most sunsets are bright and vibrant, and when we paint them we want our colors to also be bright and vibrant. Of course not every sunset is bright, especially if it's foggy, smoky, or there's pollution in the air. Those conditions can make great sunsets too. Just keep in mind the less you mix the colors on your canvas the brighter they will be. Which brings me to step three, blending. Knowing how to blend your colors so they melt into each other like you see in some sunsets is important. I show you how to blend in my tutorials, but I have a specific lesson on blending sunsets in the first workshop below called "Simple Blended Sunset." All of the painting workshops below will give you everything you need to paint a sunset/sunrise painting along with me. They include an art lesson, supply list, full ~30-60 min video tutorial, written instructions, traceable, and reference photo. Sunset & Sunrise Painting Art Lessons/WorkshopsStep four, place your sun. Where you place your sun has a lot to do with the colors you see, if you decide to paint the sun at all... You don't have to paint the sun if it's not in the view, or if it's behind an object in your painting, or it's gone all the way down past the horizon. It's up to you. Generally, the higher the sun, the more blue you will see in the top part of your sunset. The yellows and oranges are closest to the sun. You can learn a lot more about the color formula of sunsets in the "Blue Ridge Sunset" painting lesson above. Learning about the color formula of sunsets will help you know how to place your colors in your sunset from a photo, life, or even your imagination. Step five, paint clouds in your sunset. Most sunsets with lots of colors have clouds. The tricky part is painting those clouds. Do you want to paint more realistic looking clouds? Impressionistic, or more abstract? That's up to you. Your brush strokes are really important in getting the look you want. I teach you more in the "Sunset with Sailboats", workshop above. Plus, I have many more tutorials that can help you practice. Now that you have five key steps to painting a sunset or sunrise, check out these 30+ sunset paintings to paint with me.
