Learning how to paint with acrylics can be fun and relaxing, or it can be challenging and frustrating. I'm here to make it easy and pleasant for you to learn what you need to know and practice so that you can become a better painter. You can learn how to paint with acrylics right here, with my painting lessons and tutorials. Here are my nine steps to becoming a better acrylic painter. Step 1: Start with simple supplies. All you need is an acrylic paint set, brush set, surface to paint on (art journal, watercolor paper, canvas or panel) and a special palette to keep you paints wet. All my supplies I like to use are listed here. You will want to have your supplies purchased and ready to go before you start so that you can complete the paintings with me. Step 2: Get a Lesson Plan or Workshop to paint along with me. Each lesson plan begins with a lesson, you can see what the lessons will be about in the workshop or lesson plan description. You may not understand the lesson and why it's important. I will teach you why the lesson is key for every artist to know so that you can paint or create whatever art you want to. All my lessons are geared to helping you become a better artist. After the lesson, is a tutorial that teaches you how to complete your own acrylic painting using the lesson you just learned. The tutorials include landscape paintings, seascapes, ocean paintings, animal paintings, flower paintings, cityscapes and more. The inspiration behind each painting is from the beauty found all over the world. You can pick individual paintings that inspire you, subjects you want to learn, or enjoy a full workshop based on the lessons or on a destination. You can check them all out below. The different styles of paintings help you discover different ways to paint, so they will include abstract, realism, impressionism and other styles. You can always choose a lesson plan or workshop based on a style you would like to learn how to paint. The more you know about each style, the more you will understand how the different looks are created. This will expand your options, and help you discover your own style based on your preferences. They are all fun! Choose a lesson, or a workshop below, to begin. To see more lesson plans, click here. Each lesson plans include a supply list, how to mix the colors you will need in the tutorial, a simple to read lesson, a full real-time tutorial with written instructions, a traceable for those who are still working on drawing skills, and a reference photo. Step 3: Then it's time to gather the supplies you will use to paint along. I have simplified them to make starting to paint easy for you (see step 1 above). I have listed the colors and what you need to mix each one, to match the colors I use in each lesson plan. I use the same colors for all the tutorials in each workshop, that way you only need to mix once for each four paintings in a workshop. At this point, mix your colors with my help in the lesson plan and then we can begin painting. Step 4: Watch the full real-time tutorial. Access to a video tutorial is included in each lesson plan. Simply click on the video in the lesson plan, and begin painting. You'll want to watch from a device, such as your TV, computer, tablet, or phone. Just make sure it's safe from spills and paint splatters. My tutorials will help you practice. Every great artist has done a lot of that. But, you don't have to do it alone. I'll explain everything as we go so you can learn more and know why I make the decisions I do in my paintings. The lesson plans I provide will help you get the best results. If you learn better by reading, I have included written instructions. I find it helpful to have both. Read it, then watch it, then paint right along. The videos are in real time, which makes them easy to follow. You can always pause the video, complete the step, and move on when your ready. That's what is wonderful about enjoying a video tutorial. You will never be left behind. You can also reach me in the comments of the video if you have questions. Step 5: We usually start any painting, landscape, seascape, portrait, cityscape, animal, and flowers by tracing or sketching the picture onto our canvas, or painting the background, letting it dry, and then tracing/sketching. A traceable is provided for those who struggle with drawing. The act of tracing will help you become better at drawing, so don't feel ashamed if you need it. The traceable will ensure your composition will be great. Some of the lessons will include teaching you how to draw and create great compositions, but as you are learning, help will be provided in the lesson. Step 6: Then, we will add additional layers, in which the the step-by-step instructions are given. Each painting is different for the steps that are included. Within each step, I tell you the brush to use, the color on my brush, if I added water to it, or washed it, or just grabbed paint. I will tell you where the paint goes, what brush stroke to use and what most teachers don't include, why I'm doing all of the above. It's all needed to give you the best education in each video. If something is redundant, like the same stroke over and over... I won't bore you, instead I'll put on some nice music to help you relax with me. You can continue to watch in real-time, complete the step, or fast forward to the next thing. Videos are awesome for that! Step 7: The final step includes your finishing touches. In each tutorial I encourage you to be creative. If you want to change anything about the painting, the final step is a great time to do it. You can choose to follow what I do to finish up my painting. I will show you all of it! But, if you don't like what I did, I encourage you to not add it. This is a great time to learn what I do, but do what YOU want. I encourage you to take the reference away if you're working on trying to be more creative, look back at your painting and fix anything that you want to change. At first, you may find that you follow what I do closely, but the more you paint with me, the more you will begin feeling confident to make your own changes to make the painting fit your style. Your painting will not look exactly like mine. In fact, I can't even copy a painting I've completed before exactly like the original. No two paintings will match perfectly! That's great! Our preferences on how much detail to keep, the colors we use, our unique brushstrokes, and skill levels will make our paintings look different. This makes us unique, which is a wonderful thing! Step 8: Once you're happy with your painting it's time to sign your work. You can sign it in a corner on the painting (small is best) or on the back. You should feel proud of of what you've created. Every painting means you are progressing and it's the process, not the result, that matters the most. You may love it, or you may feel like there are things you would like to change. Take note of the changes. You can always make changes to acrylic paintings later on, try to make those changes in the next lesson, or give it another try. Each lesson plan is downloadable, so as long as you have the device you downloaded it to, you will always have access to it to try it again. Or, just let it be and with each painting you will see progress. Each lesson plan includes a place to discuss what you learned from the lesson. This page helps you think about your preferences so you can begin taking note of them to discover your own unique style. Because, that's what art is about, learning to express yourself! Step 9: Place the paintings in a frame, on your wall, or gift them. Although you can not legally use the paintings for commercial purposes, such as selling them, you certainly can enjoy them and share it with others. I paint on panels in easy to frame sizes, so you can find a frame, pop out the glass, and stick your painting inside.
