How to Paint a Sunset Over a Valley | SHENANDOAH VALLEY, VIRGINIA Painting

Learn how to paint a sunset over the valley inspired by the Shenandoah Valley of Virginaia. Artist Ashley Krieger is traveling and painting in all 50 U.S. states. Today she takes you to Virginia to capture the sunset over the blue ridge mountains. Here you can learn how she painted this scene.
Virginia Painting

While we were in Virginia we took a drive along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. It was a gorgeous drive and we hit it at just the right time, sunset. There are several pullouts along the drive and we enjoyed one, cuddled up watching the sun go down. I brought all my painting things to paint plein air but that evening it was very cold. This is good news, so the leaves can turn colors, but painting outside is very difficult in cold weather. We missed the bright fall trees by just a week we think, so I decided to capture the amazing colors in the sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains. I painted the scene later at another beautiful location, Hungry Mother Lake. This is a very beautiful state, we loved our time here.

There is definitely a trick to it. I do let the color blue or yellow dry first so they don't mix and turn green. ?
