Zentangle for Kids Book Review

I got the itch to buy a Zentangle book for my  kids, because they have been loving our Zentangle art lessons. I wanted to encourage them to learn more on their own and practice it.

I was specifically looking for "step by Step," lessons of Zentangle patterns, something visually appealing for kids. and inspirational to be creative.   I struggled to find a Zentangle art book that was inspiring and appropriate for ages 6-12 on the market. I finally found one.

Zentangle for Kids by Jane Marbaix is a new release as of November 2015. This book is definitely filling a need for appropriate Zentangle books for younger kids.

So here is what you will find in the book.
  • It's colorful , not cluttered, and easy to read for younger readers.
  • A what is Zentangle explanation with several cute examples.
  • A supplies needed page. You only need a pencil, black pens (they recommend .25mm and .05mm), and paper. Everything else is optional (stencils, colored pens, rubber stamps, inkpad, paints, and artist tiles). They are truly optional.
  •  Has a how to use the book explanation.
  •  Getting started pages that have a few simple patterns, the names of the patterns and how to draw them.  Again it is super simple, step by step, instructions, and easy to follow.
  • There are places to draw in the book and several animals the kids can trace (they made them big and traceable) so the kids don't have to draw in the book and they don't have to be good drawers. The book does have good drawing paper quality pages, but isn't for painting.
  •  It starts with simple designs from the beginning of the book and the patterns get more difficult towards the end of the book.
  • Project "How-To" pages that are fun, such as; making bookmarks, greeting cards, Christmas themed decorations, bunting decor, and my personal favorite the book cover.
  •  The back cover has the price $12.95 US, $14.95 CAN, I think this is a  very reasonable price.

To wrap it up. This is the best  book I have found for teaching kids how to Zentangle.  I highly recommend it for kids ages 6-12 years old, who love art.  It is a fun and an easy way to teach kids the elements of art, like line and shape. My kids give it a 10 star, on a scale of 0-10, and that is not exaggerating. They have been doing it on their own and the book doesn't just sit on the shelf.

Hope this was helpful!

I have a 16 year old that is just discovering his inner artist. Is there a Zentangle book you would recommend for that age?

Yes! I recommend "One Zentangle A Day" by Krahula. I added a link to it under website in this comment. I am not sure if the link will work.
