How To Make a Himmeli Sculpture with Straws

4/12/2016

I am a big fan of geometric shapes, they look modern and fun. In this art lesson we create geometric sculptures using straws and string. The geometric design is inspired by the Scandinavian designs called Himmeli. In this lesson we create a simple Himmeli prism design. These sculptures are used as baby mobiles and Christmas decorations in Sweden and Norway.

A note for homeschoolers and educators. This art project would go great with a Europe Unit Study and also to teach Geometry (angles, shapes, and measurements) in a super fun way!

My kids loved this lesson. I encourage you to give them straws and string to create more designs if they wish at the end of this lesson.

Ready To Create Your Own Straw Sculpture?
You will need...

  • Straws (Fatter straws are easier for younger kids)
  • String (Yarn, hemp, or wire all work)...I preferred the hemp because it was stiff and didn't coil like the wire.
  • Needle (plastic, blunt, or make your own from wire) Not needed if your string/wire is stiff
  • Scissors  if using string and wire cutters if using wire
  • Measuring tool (ruler, tape measurer)

That is it! Super Simple and cheap. This makes a great family or large group project!
