How to Marble with Acrylic Paint

1/28/2016

Marbling is a fun technique that uses colors and a viscous solution known as size. When I was younger I would create marbled paper and use it as stationary all the time. This project is different then marbling on paper because we use acrylic paint for our colors,  a pouring medium as our size and a canvas as our surface. This art piece dries very shiny, looks fancy, and works great as decor.

Marbling is over the top, fun! You never know what the end result will be, which makes this a good Process Art Project.  It is so simple to create these paintings that it is a great project for every level of artist.  You can say, "I love you" by gifting this fun project.  I made this one into a  Valentines art project by pouring heart shapes with the paint. I wonder what yours is going to turn out like?

Ready to Create Your Own!

You need these supplies...

The supplies are listed with 2+ projects in mind. You will want to buy plastic bottles for each color you will be using and  each project uses about 6 fl oz of Pouring Medium.

Liquitex Pouring Medium 8 oz. [PACK OF 2 ]
Liquitex BASICS Acrylic Paint Tube 4 oz, 6-Piece Set
12x12 Canvas- value 7 Pack- 12X12
8 Oz Natural Plastic Cylinder Bottles, Pack of 6
Reynolds Freezer Paper (parchment paper works too)
Plastic Tablecloth
Glitter
Art Smock and/or old clothes
Old 11x17" Cookie or Baking Pan

Gloves- optional

This project can easily get very messy, so you might want to...

  1.  Cover your table or surface with a disposable drop cloth or table cover (Not Newspapers).
  2. Wear old clothes and/or art smocks
  3. Wear gloves.  It is easy to pour carefully with the bottles without getting the paint on yourself. However when you move your canvas around to move the paint it can get on your hands and is difficult to get off.

Thank you. I may make some of these using a Xmas tree next year and give as gifts to my Crafty Christmas Ladies who fix things, have a craft sale at church, and then give to the Benevolance Fund.

I love that this post shared with us that it is possible for us to go with marbling using acrylic paint. My wife has been looking for activities to do with the kids. Maybe I will buy them an acrylic paint kit for them to do marbling.
