We are gearing up for the big Superbowl game and for all those fellow football lovers, here is an art lesson for ya!

Learn how to paint a football while I show you a dry brush technique. This is a simple, step-by-step tutorial, great for beginners, teens, boys, and parents wanting to create their own decorations for their boys rooms.

I will show you how to make your football look rustic using acrylic paints and a wide brush (I use a hake brush).

Let's Get Started!

Follow along, and have fun painting a football in the video lesson below.

Steps

  1.  Paint Background- Use the  paint color burnt umber and with a large flat brush paint vertical brush strokes covering the entire canvas unevenly. Let it dry.
  2. Add Layers-  Paint vertical brush strokes on your canvas in a few areas, mostly the outer edges. Layering first with an accent color and then a light and dark of your main color.
  3. Draw Football- Use watercolor pencil to draw the outline of the football making it larger than the canvas and angled. Draw strips at the ends making sure they are even and equal distance from the football center.
  4. Paint Football- Mix a brown using burnt umber and white. Paint the football letting some of the colors underneath to show by not painting the area completely.
  5.  Paint white- Paint the white strips at each end with your small flat brush letting the under layers show though.
  6. Paint laces- Paint a line following the curve at the top of your football. Make sure it is equal distances from the paint strips on the ends. Paint eight lines for laces that are curved and short.
  7. Add Grit and Shadows- Add black paint using your wide flat brush on the outer areas and bottom of the Football.  Paint shadows between and below the laces. Paint black lines outside the white strips. Add blue paint with a few brush strokes over the football. Touch up your football.
